Although many users prefer portable solutions these systems can be deployed as a fixed PC or server based system to continually monitor you wireless space. Many radios include managment features. For instance the Redline Communcations point to point or point to multi-point systems include and RF analyzer used for setup. Trapeze Networks' RingMaster managment software can be used for planning and once deployed can provide a current "broken glass" display of the the RF energy. These systems can be mixed and matched to give you exactly what you want with little configuration required. For example, WiFi Pilot can be bundled with MetaGeek, OmniPeek Peer Maps are overlaid on a Trapeze RingMaster display, drivers are avialble to run the AirPcap with WildPackets OmniPeek. Most AP's have a monitor mode and can feed any analyzer. Typically cnfigured for ports 5000 - 5128 and the analyzers are configure to listen on those ports - capture the packet and strip away the non-802.11 packet data providing an in place monitoring solution. Freeware will only get you so far and should not be your only monitoring solution.
